Mikhail Tal vs Vasily Smyslov

Yugoslavia, 1959. At the Candidates Tournament that would decide Botvinnik's next challenger, the 22-year-old Mikhail Tal faced former World Champion Vasily Smyslov, a model of positional purity. Tal answered the solid Caro-Kann with a storm of pieces, sacrificed his way to Smyslov's king, and won a brilliancy prize. The victory helped propel Tal to first place and a shot at the world title.

The lesson

Against a great positional player, change the nature of the game. Tal refused to let Smyslov grind a quiet Caro-Kann; he opened lines and threw pieces at the king until the position became a calculation contest — Tal's home ground. When you face a stronger strategist, drag them into chaos.

20. Kd220.Kd2 — after 19…Qa1+ Smyslov's counterplay arrives one move too late; Tal's king walks calmly to safety.
22. Rxa122.Rxa1 — the dust settles with Tal a clear piece up and Smyslov's king exposed in the centre.
26. Bd426.Bd4 — Smyslov resigned. The Magician had out-calculated a former World Champion and earned the brilliancy prize.

Frequently asked
