Most chess apps tell you a move was wrong. BetterChess tells you why — out loud, in plain language, the moment it matters.
It pairs a real chess engine with an AI coach that talks you through your games move by move: it catches your blunders before they cost you, explains the idea behind the better move, and turns your recurring weak spots into puzzles made for you. Your estimated rating comes from your own play here, not a vanity number.
It's built for improving club players — roughly the 1100–1800 range — who want a patient coach available any time, not just generic lessons.
We don't promise miracles. BetterChess is a practice tool: it can make your practice far more effective, but the improvement comes from you. We won't claim to "guarantee" any rating, and the coach is grounded in engine analysis so it isn't making things up.
All position analysis in BetterChess is performed by the Stockfish chess engine, which we use unmodified via the standard UCI protocol. Stockfish is © the Stockfish developers and is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License v3. Its source code is available at the official Stockfish repository; in the browser we load the stockfish.js WebAssembly build, which is also GPLv3. The Stockfish project does not endorse BetterChess.
