The short answer. The youngest chess grandmaster ever is Abhimanyu Mishra (United States), who earned the GM title on 30 June 2021 at 12 years, 4 months and 25 days — breaking Sergey Karjakin's record of 12 years 7 months, which had stood since 2002. The full ranked top 25 is below.
Grandmaster (GM) is the highest title FIDE, the world chess federation, awards — and once earned, it's held for life. To become a GM a player must score three GM norms (strong results against a field that includes other grandmasters, in eligible international tournaments) and push their FIDE rating over 2500 at some point. Crucially, there is no age requirement: the title rewards performance, not years on the calendar. That's why a 12-year-old can hold a title that takes most serious players a lifetime — if ever — to reach.
For decades the youngest-GM mark was a procession of famous names. Bobby Fischer set the modern benchmark in 1958 at 15 years 6 months; Judit Polgár broke it in 1991; Péter Lékó, Étienne Bacrot and Ruslan Ponomariov chipped away through the 1990s; Sergey Karjakin took it under 13 in 2002 and held it for nearly nineteen years. Then, in June 2021, American prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra became the first to break 12 years 5 months — the current record. The downward march is no accident: engines, online play and structured coaching now reach talented children years earlier than in Fischer's day.

These players hit three GM norms before most of us finish a tactics puzzle — but the engine of their improvement was the same one available to every club player: review the game, find the mistake, fix the pattern, repeat. Abhimanyu Mishra of the United States is the youngest grandmaster in history. He qualified for the GM title on 30 June 2021 at the age of 12 years, 4 months and 25 days, in Budapest — breaking Sergey Karjakin's long-standing record of 12 years, 7 months, which had stood since 2002.
There is no minimum age. The Grandmaster (GM) title is earned by achieving three GM norms in eligible tournaments and crossing a 2500 FIDE rating, regardless of age. That's why prodigies can earn it as young as 12 — the requirement is performance, not years.
Sergey Karjakin held the record for nearly 19 years, having become a GM at 12 years 7 months in 2002. Before him, Bu Xiangzhi briefly held it (1999), and going further back, Bobby Fischer set the original modern benchmark in 1958 at 15 years, 6 months.
Hou Yifan of China is the youngest woman ever to earn the full Grandmaster title, achieving it in 2008 at 14 years and 6 months. Judit Polgár — the strongest female player in history — earned the GM title in 1991 at 15 years 4 months, breaking Bobby Fischer's record at the time.
Earlier and better training is the main reason. Engine analysis, online play against strong opposition, and structured coaching now reach talented children years sooner than in Fischer's era, so the age at which a prodigy can hit three GM norms has dropped steadily. The record fell from 15 (Fischer, 1958) to under 13 (Mishra, 2021) in roughly six decades.
