Ladder Mate

Endgame · also: lawnmower mate, staircase mate

The Ladder Mate, also called the lawnmower or staircase mate, uses two rooks (or a queen and rook) to push the enemy king to the edge of the board and mate it.

One rook seals the seventh rank while the other checks along the eighth — the king, driven to the edge, is mated.

The two rooks work in tandem: one cuts the king off along a rank or file while the other checks to drive it back a row. Then they swap roles and repeat, walking the king to the edge one rung at a time.

The golden rule is to keep the rooks safe from the king. If the king ever steps toward the rook on its rank, simply send that rook to the far side of the board and carry on — the king can never catch it.

It’s one of the first mates every player should master, because it needs no help from your own king. Two rooks alone, or a queen and rook, can deliver it from almost any starting position.

Frequently asked

Why is it called the lawnmower mate?

Because the two rooks mow the king back row by row, like a lawnmower going up and down, until it’s pushed off the edge of the board.

Do I need my king to help?

No. Two rooks, or a queen and a rook, can deliver the ladder mate entirely on their own — that’s what makes it so reliable for beginners.
